Inaugural Moroto Peace Race, Uganda
Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation third peace race was held on 30th April 2005 in Moroto town,Uganda.
Approximately 3,000 people from West Pokot and Turkana Districts in Kenya;Moroto, Nakapirpirit Districts in Uganda attended the inaugural Moroto Peace Race.
The race was organised for the young men and their women counterparts from the three communities.This age group constitutes the primary actors in the pastoral conflict.They are equally the key target and partners required for effective pastoral conflict intervention.
The main objective of the race was to bring these adversaries together to interact so as to appreciate and know each other.
The Chief Guest to the Moroto Peace Race was the Minister for Karamoja affairs,the Hon Peter Lokeris.Other guests were Simion Lesirma,Assistant Minister for planning and National Development (Kenya) and MPs Mwancha Okioma,Wycliffe Osundwa and Samuel Moroto from Kenya;Rose Milgan Locham and Micah Lolem from Uganda.
World Athletic Champions also made their presence felt in the race. Present were;Tegla Loroupe(President of the foundation) Susan Chepkemei,Joyce Chepchumba,Rose Poiywo and Mary Pitkany.The event gave an opportunity for the leaders and guests to address the issue of peace,security and development in the Karamoja region.The leaders directed their peace to the pastoralists while appealing to the governments to support the leaders,peace and development agencies in the effort towards peace and development among pastoralists in the region.
It also gave Tegla Loroupe ,the President and Richard Krop,the Regional coordinator for TLPF the opportunity to address the communities and interact with both national and local leaders.They also shared TLPF approach to peacebuilding and development with leaders and partner organizations in the Karamoja Region.
This race was a major success for the foundation as it was the beginning of a new peaceful journey the communities in that area.
